Dorothea Chang Publishing, Fall 2007
I first heard about the design fellowships offered at Chronicle Books while wrapping up my studies in graphic design at Rhode Island School of Design. Having had prior experience in a branding firm and motion graphics studio, a fellowship with a publishing house was the perfect opportunity to round out my graphic design experience and I eagerly jumped at the opportunity to apply.
Even with its reputation for being an innovative and renowned publishing house, Chronicle Books still far exceeded my expectations. Not only did I get to design projects across a wide range of formats, learn the ins and outs of publishing, and participate in Innovation brainstorming sessions with the Creative Director, I also gained a great deal just from working side by side with the other fellows, collaborating with editors and production wizards, and gleaning advice and inspiration from the brilliant, friendly, and dedicated designers in the studio. In fact, one of the most surprising things I took away from my six month fellowship was how individual people and the corporate community as a whole can conduct themselves in a socially and ecologically responsible manner while still remaining relevant, accessible, and successful-an admirable feat for ANY business in ANY industry.
In short, my six months as a fellow at Chronicle Books was nothing short of amazing and I would encourage anyone who has the opportunity to apply to GET ON THAT ASAP! =)
